NRC works with over 75 tribes. There are 550+ American Indian tribes in the U.S. Reservation jobs are limited. Reservation unemployment is 35% to 85%. Many American Indians work full-time yet still fall below poverty level. Poverty ranges from 38% to 63%. American Indians have the highest food insecurity in the U.S. Youth on the reservations are at risk. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year olds. The high school dropout rate is 30 to 70%. Only 11% of American Indians have a college degree. There is a health crisis in Indian country. American Indians have a diabetes epidemic. The TB rate is 7 times higher for American Indians. Cancer-related disparities are high. About 90,000 American Indian families are homeless or under-housed. Partners agree that reservation living conditions are like “the Third World.”
